Upward Sports
Joan Disco, Upward Sports Coordinator

In 1977 I graduated from Ledyard High School, with a college prep path and a concentration in agri-science.  I was a three sport athlete which led to my participation in collegiate softball for Eastern Connecticut State University.  In 1982 I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Athletic Coaching and a concentration in Psychology. My Master’s program was also at Eastern and concentrated in Psychology.  I taught for 25 years, mostly at Andover Elementary School, before retiring in 2010. I have coached children from kindergarten through high school, in basketball, softball, baseball, and soccer.

On May 26, 1990, God blessed me with the most amazing husband, Ernie Disco. Ernie and I are proudly raising three daughters.  Elizabeth graduated from my alma mater in 2015 with a major in Communication and a minor in Political Science. She is currently substitute teaching in the Ledyard School System.  Jennifer graduated in 2016, also from ECSU with a major in Spanish and a minor in Latin American Studies. She currently works at Goodwill. Chantell, will be graduating from Montville High School this year, and will continue on with a fifth year program with Ledyard High School and Three Rivers to transition to college. All three are on their way!!

My family and I have been at Gallup Hill for 19 years. During that time I have served many roles, but when Upward was brought to our church I knew where I should be.  Currently, I am the Upward Sports & Outreach Director.  Because of my passion for working with children, my love for sports, and my will to serve God in a meaningful way, Upward Sports Ministries was a perfect fit. As a native of Ledyard, reaching out to the community is near to my heart.

If you are a parent and would like to have your child(ren) sign up for Upward please see our “Ministries” Tab! If you are community member and would like to talk to me about a community event or partnership please contact the church office.

Play with purpose
Established in 1995, Upward Sports is the largest Christian youth sports provider in the world. Each year approximately 500,000 children play in more than 2,000 churches in 47 states.

Upward Sports is the only youth sports provider of the 360 Progression, which is a uniquely designed sports experience that develops the total athlete, mentally, athletically, spiritually and socially.  As players progress through the Upward Sports programming, these four teachings of the 360 Progression adapt and expand with them.  It is centered on the development of Jesus found in Luke 2:52, "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man."

Upward Sports athletes grow in character, confidence, faith, and sportsmanship during their personal athletic journeys, and become more than just an athlete.  For more information on the 360 Progression and Upward Sports click here.

Gallup Hill is proud to be part of the Upward Sports program.
